I remember very well when I joined my first network marketing company. I was 28 years old, married with 3 children and active-duty military.
A neighbor came to my door and asked me if I had thought about ways to make more money. He talked about me having ‘a business of my own’.
In a second or two I shot back: “Are you kidding? Remember, I am in the military! I am underpaid.”
True. I wanted to serve my country – but I also want to live life on my terms. I want to provide more for my family.
A few days later I was watching him draw circles on a whiteboard in my living room. I can still hear and see it today in my mind: “This is me. I will sponsor YOU, who will sponsor 6, who will sponsor 4, who sponsor 2”. (Yep, … me, you, 6-4-2). “And when you do and you each does just $200 worth of business using their own products and selling some, YOU will make $2,500 per month. And when you do that 3 times YOU will make $65,000 per year – part-time! And I will help you.”
“Whut? That’s it? I’m in. I just knew that I could do this. Surely I will find 6 people out of all of my neighbors, friends and relatives”.
Over the next several weeks and many months I did everything my sponsor and upline asked me to do. I made a list of about 100 names. I called most everyone on that list and I asked (chased?) family and friends.
I drew circles on napkins at diners. I did Flip Chart presentations. I invited people to hotel meetings and home meetings. I drew circles on white-boards. I even held numerous ‘phone-a-thons’ to see who could get the most “no’s”.
I bought products I didn’t need just to accrue more points and volume, gave some away as incentives and samples. I was even able to put together a small group and the volume to make $1,100 one month –one month. But I couldn’t sustain it. For some reason it just wasn’t working like they told me.
So when I asked for more advice or help my upline just told me to do what they were taught to do – to find and talk to even more people – have more meetings. They reminded me that everyone was a prospect.
I again did what they asked — and again got the same results as before.
Surely there was a better way. Others in my business and in this industry were succeeding. I saw their stories and photos in magazines and heard their stories on stage at events. Why not me? I doubted myself. I couldn’t figure out why this was not working. So I quit.
Well, … I actually failed and quit many times! Why? Because over the following years I kept coming back to network marketing – with maybe 4 or 5 other companies. Each time I did what my sponsor and upline told me to do to succeed. I think in all of those recent attempts I only personally recruited 3 or 4 people, again built some groups … and they quit. I think that it was because they wouldn’t (or couldn’t) duplicate me – my belief and passion and what was inside of me. Clearly something was not working. So I again got burned out and disillusioned and quit.
What made me try so many times? It was because I felt something inside of me … a passion and a conviction in my heart of hearts. I was willing to do the work and just knew that I could ‘do this’ – if I could just figure out what was missing … and why.
Fast-forward to 2015 when I again reflected back on my career. That my education, experience, hard work, excellent appraisals and loyalty to my company did not guarantee secure employment.
I painfully remembered the two l-o-n-g layoffs and loss of income, savings, self-esteem and using much of our 401k to stay afloat. I was grateful for the job that I had found 2 years earlier but was also reflecting back on the feelings of helplessness that the sudden loss of income brought to our family. I remembered the promise I had made to myself and of how if I could help it something like that would never happen to me again. I wanted to be in control of my financial future and security.
Up late one night I searched the Internet for another network marketing business that might have that ‘something different’ that would allow me to be successful this time.
What I found was not another traditional, ‘old school’ network marketing business opportunity, but a website about / with something called Attraction Marketing whose headlines spoke directly to me. “How To Prospect and Recruit People On The Internet – Without Rejection And Without Chasing Your Friends And Family”.
What I found when I opted in was things that I had not been taught before – things other than just make a list, go talk to more people and more people.
What I found was a complete internet marketing system and something called Attraction Marketing. , that provided proven strategies and methods for how to target (find) and recruit people … qualified leads … that actually wanted help and to know more. I found a step-by-step roadmap and tools that was broad enough for all facets of marketing but also specific enough to attract targeted traffic and leads teach and help me to do what I wanted to do, something that I could truly do from home, that used the power and flexibility of the internet 24/7/365, AND that would close sales in auto pilot mode without the having to ‘pitch’ to people. I learned important strategies and also grew to know, like, and trust this particular mentor. His efforts introduced me to other mentors that specialized in other marketing strategies and techniques that I didn’t even know existed … like mindset. I discovered Attraction Marketing and how I can use that knowledge, techniques and strategies to succeed. These things changed my attitude, belief in myself, and my life.
That was the ‘light bulb’ moment for me. That was the moment when I realized that I had found the missing ingredients? That was the moment when I realized that those were the missing ingredients? That was what I needed to succeed and be a winner.
When I started I wasn’t ‘pushed’ to talk to everyone about my network marketing business nor made to feel weak if I didn’t. I was, however, encouraged to put my network marketing business on the ‘back burner’ for a little bit until I could learn the strategies and how best to implement and promote the methods inside of the system and until I could first generate traffic and leads.
They offered me help. They offered me the tools I needed. They showed me how. They offered me coaching and mentoring. All I needed to do was to bring the one variable or ingredient that was missing – ME. What was I willing to do?
I needed to put in the effort … to be willing to focus on one part of the process at a time, to learn and develop new skills, to trust in and follow a proven path, and to take the action to get the results I wanted.
And when I did those things I would produce income quickly and would better be prepared to promote my own network marketing business when the time was right and my prospect wanted to hear about it.
These things changed my attitude, belief in myself, and my life.
I am at the beginnings of my journey … the journey to learn and implement the fundamentals of Attraction Marketing and connect to and learn from a community of top producers and income earners who are committed to mentoring me as I grow my business, my income, and my future.
I know that it won’t happen overnight. (But neither did getting my college education or learning my skills where I work). I know that it won’t always be easy. I know that it is a process of learning and doing. And I also know that it will be worth it.
